Kyrgyz officials are positive that plans for the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway project will proceed, despite skeptics who believe the odds are stacked against it, United States media agency Voice of America reported on April 11.

The project, known as CKU, has faced financing and technical challenges, as well as disagreements among the participating countries regarding the route. However, the Kyrgyz government is determined to move forward with the project and has allocated $500 million from its budget.

The Breakdown

The China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway project has the potential to enhance regional connectivity and boost economic development in Central Asia. However, it faces significant obstacles that need to be overcome for the project to become a reality.

The participating countries disagree on the route for the railway, with Kyrgyzstan favoring the longer and more technically complex northern route, while China and Uzbekistan support the less costly southern route.

Technical challenges, such as the need for numerous tunnels and bridges on the northern route, as well as differences in railway track gauge, add to the complexity and cost of the project.
