The United States has provided Ukraine with thousands of infantry weapons and over 500,000 rounds of ammunition that were seized from Iran, the U.S. Justice Department Office of Public Affairs announced on April 9. The transfer was made on April 4 in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The weapons themselves were produced via a civil forfeiture action the Justice Department filed on weapons en route from Yemen to Iran, the Justice Department writes.
The Breakdown
The US military has transferred more than 5,000 AK-47 assault rifles, machine guns, sniper rifles, and 500,000 rounds of ammunition to Ukraine.
The weapons and munitions were seized from four "stateless" vessels that were intercepted by US naval ships and partner forces between May 2021 and February 2023.
